To get our mind off of things, my mom and I went to Mark Ryden's show on April 24. Seeing his work during the week is the absolute best time to go. There were no crowds. Literally about ten people came and went the entire time we were there. It couldn't have been more ideal (except if maybe Mark himself had been there). It felt as if we had the entire gallery to ourselves. it was a wonderful day!
His new work, as always, is incredible. I never ceased to be amazed at his work. As much as we tried to capture the beauty in each piece with photographs, it's pretty impossible to do so. There's nothing like seeing his work in person. Each piece draws you in and you find it hard to look away. Mark really is in a league of his own is his genre.
While every piece was great, a few pieces were absolutely stunning. The main show piece "The Tree of Life" draws you in with it's vast size, brilliant colors, and incredibly beautiful and intricate carved frame. When I saying stunning, I'm not exaggerating. The $800,000 price tag reflects it's magnificence. The second piece, which is now my favorite Ryden painting to date (and shown above), is "Ghost Girl." So haunting and beautiful. I saw it from across the room and literally gasped. Absolutely brilliant!
What made the experience even more fun and memorable was the inclusion of our Blythes, Camille Rose and Sadie. Sure we received a few weird looks, but I could not pass up the opportunity to have photos taken of our girls next to actual Ryden paintings. All of us had a blast!
i probably should stop lurking so much and start posting. i just haven't been able to bring myself to do so. it's the weirdest thing. i'll have the urge to, but the moment i click onto my vox bookmark, i just .. can't. i start to feel incredibly anxious and immediately close the page out. it's like it's too much effort or something. i'm not exactly sure what my deal is, but i hope i snap out of it soon.
thing is, i do most of my thinking in bed at night. sometimes (actually a lot lately), i'm unable to stop my mind from racing and i spend half the night wide awake when i'd rather be asleep giving my mind much needed rest. by morning i'm exhausted from not getting sufficient sleep and the last thing i want to do is re-hash everything online. i suppose that's the main reason for my hiatus.
in old news, i love the smiths.

after casting lots, picking straws, and playing three rounds of "rock, paper, scissor", camille rose won the opportunity to model this gorgeous hand-knit outfit. while i think all of the girls would've looked great in it, i think it suits camille rose best. she has such beautiful coloring.
like always, she was an absolute pleasure to photograph as it's hard for her to take a bad photo (as photogenic as she is!). the detail and craftsmanship in this outfit are incredible. my mom and i are blessed to have it for our girls!
so many great shots were taken i had a difficult time choosing which photos to post, so i uploaded the rest to my flickr page. enjoy!
after seeing how well eeva's photo shoot came out, camille rose wanted time in front of the camera and, therefore, dragged sadie (my mom's MS) into the shoot with her. both girls are wearing clothes by squeaky monkey (of course!). these two have fast become quite the duo. i think their fondness for one another shows through in the photos. more can be seen on my flickr.
this post is completely self-serving. i just wanted an excuse to post these photos. ^_^
the top photo is my current favorite of camille rose. not only is she wearing one of my favorite squeaky monkey outfits, but the backdrop is TADO! my two obsessions merged together. what could be better?
the second photo shows my mom's second blythe (left), a nameless mademoiselle rosebud, along with prudence on the right. camille looks bored, ha.
the upside to her knowing what her gift was, was she was able to buy a few outfits beforehand so they would arrive in time for the big day. thankfully, it all worked out perfectly. after obsessively looking at blythe clothes (mainly sugarmag) on ebay and a few online shops, we ordered a handful of classic white pieces which can be mixed and matched easily. then one day, i hit the jackpot as far as dolly clothes go. i happened upon a website called squeaky monkey run by tiffany bauer who designs and hand
makes blythe clothes in limited quantities - essentially designer doll clothes. what could be better? her incredible photos and fabulous clothes designs immediately caught my eye. i must've spent an hour alone looking at her flickr album of archived outfits and her personal blythe collection. the quality of her clothes (in my opinion) is above anything else i've come across and justifies her prices (which, like human designer clothes, are a bit on the pricey side). after gathering jpegs of pieces we were interested in, but weren't for sale in her online boutique, i contacted her inquiring if she accepted commission work and thankfully she was happy to make every piece we were interested in! we felt like we won a prize or something (ha). to our surprise, a few items were already made and ready to ship while others needed a few more stitching and a few others would need to be made from scratch. that was A-OK with us! she sent half our order on tuesday which arrived on the 26th (phew!) and the other half should arrive with a few weeks. can't wait!!due to a hectic, busy week, we finally had time yesterday to dress our girls up and do a mini photoshoot. in the above photo, prudence is wearing a squeaky monkey chocolate brown velvet demure coat and distressed denim flares while camille herself is sporting a pair of squeaky classic denim jeans and a beautiful white sugarmag top. don't the girls look just lovely?! i must confess, we had lots of fun dressing them up. in that moment, i think we regressed back to little girls. it was almost surreal, though somewhat bittersweet for me. not being able to dress and style camille rose's hair myself is pretty frustrating to say the least. losing my hand function due to my injury has been the hardest thing for me to deal with. i feel so disconnected from everything not being able to interact with things. but that's life and i don't think camille rose faults me for it. she'll be well taken care of. ^_^
everyone meet camille rose! she is a "night flower" blythe given to me as a gift from Lauren for my birthday last month! isn't she beautiful!? i named her after one of my favorite artists, camille rose garcia. however, if you know me, you already knew that. i'm still stunned that someone i've never met in person (though whom i consider one of my dearest friends) would buy me such a wonderful gift!! i can't thank lauren enough for giving me my very first blythe. it's something i'll never forget and camille rose will always have special meaning to me. to me, she represents the good in the world: love, friendship, and a giving heart.
it's funny, i find myself just staring at her throughout the day. her dark hair, beautiful pale skin, and gorgeous big eyes are transfixing. it's still hard to believe she's mine. i have admired lauren's collection for so long and have had many conversations of my wanting to start my own, but i could never save up for one. vinyl toys have had me hooked for over a year now and most of my extra spending money has been going towards the next "new release." also, subconsciously, i think i didn't purchase a blythe knowing full well that once i seen one in person, i'd become obsessed with them and the last thing i needed was to become enthralled with yet another pricey hobby. however, i've become somewhat bored with the vinyl scene and have decided to cut back on my collecting. within a few months my collection will be reduced by half after i sell off a few things which means ... i'll now have room for more blythes!!
i thank miss lauren a million times over for giving me the kick in the butt i needed! ^___^ i look forward to learning about blythes, customizing tips (for starters, how do i straighten her hair?), and getting to know other collectors. now the question is, which one do i buy my mom for her birthday in two weeks?? she, too, wants to start collecting (i have the raddest mom ever!) and wants one that looks the complete opposite of camille rose. she want a blonde or light brunette. any suggetions would be appreciated!
